Promo Codes
Offer discount codes for ticket buyers.
Understanding Promo Codes
A promo code is a code a buyer enters at checkout to reduce their ticket total. Each code belongs to one ticketing form and takes either a percentage or a fixed amount off the order.
Codes are meant to be handed out to specific people rather than advertised on the form. The entry field is a small link under the ticket tiers, and buyers who don't have a code can ignore it.
Enable Promo Codes
Toggle Enable Promo Code to show the promo code entry field on your ticketing form. With the toggle off, no code can be entered even if codes exist.
Creating a Code
- Promo Code — the text buyers type. Letters, numbers, and underscores only. Case does not matter, so
EARLYBIRDandearlybirdare the same code. - Percent Off or Amount Off — choose one. A code cannot have both.
- Expires — optional date and time. Leave it blank and the code never expires.
Expiration
The Expires date and time is in UTC, not your local time zone.
Once that moment passes the code stops working. A buyer who enters it sees the same "That code is invalid" message as a code that never existed — expired codes are not called out separately, so nobody can probe your form to discover which codes are real.
Orders placed before the expiry keep their discount. Expiring a code has no effect on money already collected.
What Can and Cannot Be Changed
Two things about a code are fixed once set.
The discount can't be changed after the code is created. To offer a different amount, expire the existing code and create a new one.
The code text locks as soon as someone redeems it. Until then you can rename it freely. After the first order, the field becomes read-only and shows how many orders used it. This protects the record of what past buyers actually used, and stops any share links you've already sent from breaking.
TIP
Need a different code or a different discount on a live event? Expire the old code and add a new one. Past orders keep their original code and discount.
Deleting a Code
Deleting a code stops it working immediately, on its own, whether or not it has an expiry date. Orders that already used it keep their discount and still show the code.
Sharing a Code by Link
Add cv_tpromo to your ticketing page URL and the code is applied automatically when the page loads:
https://your-site.org/your-event?cv_tpromo=EARLYBIRDThe buyer never has to find or type anything — the discount is already applied when they arrive. This is the easiest way to get a code to a specific group, such as an email to board members or past attendees.
The code still has to be valid. If it has expired, been deleted, or belongs to a different form, the promo box opens with the code filled in and the usual invalid message, and the buyer can continue at full price.
Because the code appears in the URL, use link sharing for codes you're comfortable having visible to anyone who receives the link.
